Synopsis: Coal is regarded as the world’s largest and cheapest source of energy. But coal is also the dirtiest form of fossil fuel and the single biggest source of greenhouse gases that causes climate change. Many developing countries including India just can’t live without it. In fact, 70% of India’s energy needs comes from coal. Apart from helping the economy grow at a much faster pace, coal is also needed to support the lives of millions of its people who rely on the mineral as a key source of their livelihood and economic survival.Can India move away from the highly polluting power source to cleaner energy? What will be the costs to the lives of its people should it stop relying on the nation’s most critical resource?
